The Story Behind Veritas

Long before there was Veritas Construction Services, there was a kid, a railroad tie, a coffee can full of nails, and a father who knew a thing or two about teaching through doing.

My father was a carpenter, and he taught me many practical skills from an early age. He kept me busy with an old railroad tie, a coffee can full of nails, and a board. After I pounded the nails in, he taught me how to pull them back out and straighten them for reuse. I occasionally joined him on job sites, watching and learning along the way.

After high school, I spent several years in construction, first on a log-home crew and later with a remodeling company. I eventually took a different path, spending part of my career as a paramedic and firefighter and starting several businesses along the way.

Then came 2010. The financial crisis turned the world upside down, and I found myself without a job. I put my tools back in the family Suburban and began taking on handyman projects and other construction work wherever I could find it.

That experience brought me back to the work I had learned to love from my father.

In 2012, I launched Veritas Construction Services. We started with smaller renovation projects, focusing primarily on exterior work and bathrooms. Before long, we expanded into kitchens and whole-home remodels.

What began out of necessity quickly became something much bigger: a company I was proud to build, surrounded by a team of talented people who care deeply about the work they do and the homeowners they serve.

Today, Veritas is a locally owned remodeling company serving homeowners throughout the Charlotte region. Our Design Centers in Matthews and Fort Mill give clients a place to explore ideas, make selections, and begin the remodeling process with our team.

Why We Do What We Do

At heart, I'm a problem-solver. As a kid, I would take apart clocks and appliances simply because I wanted to understand how they worked—and, of course, put them back together.

That curiosity has followed me into remodeling. No two homes are alike, and every project brings its own challenges, unexpected discoveries, and opportunities to find a better solution.

Over the years, people have asked me how to build a successful remodeling company. My answer is simple:

Tell the truth. Show up on time. Do what you say you will do.

Those principles aren't complicated, but they matter. Remodeling involves a lot of moving parts, and homeowners deserve a team that communicates clearly, takes ownership, and does what it says it will do—even when things don't go exactly according to plan.

That's what we strive to do at Veritas. We want our clients to feel informed, respected, and confident throughout the process.

And after more than 20 years in construction, I still enjoy the fact that no two days—or two remodels—are ever the same.

Tell the truth. Show up on time. Do what you say you will do.

Outside of Work

My wife, Karen, and I have five adult daughters. One lives with her husband in Central, South Carolina, while the other four currently call Nashville home. Visiting them often means loading up the car—and it wouldn't be unusual to find a few tools or construction supplies in the back seat.

When I'm not working, I enjoy playing disc golf in the woods and working my way through the New York Times crossword.

I suppose some things don't change much. I still like figuring things out, staying busy, and building things.
